Taunton parent carer Laura Brown has been named a finalist in the Contact Awards, recognising her extraordinary advocacy for her son and for other non-speaking autistic children and young people across the UK.
Laura Brown was nominated for an award in the Parent Changemaker category of Contact’s awards by her partner Peter for the work she does though The Spinning world of Autism – an organisation which aims to share the parent voice and lived experience of using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).
Peter said:
“Laura is the definition of a parent changemaker. Through Spinning World of Autism, she advocates for autistic individuals, the SEND crisis, and, most notably, AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). A parent of a non-speaking autistic child, Laura supports families daily – sharing accurate AAC information, breaking down myths, and guiding new users. She has spoken at Communication Works, the Houses of Parliament, and co-led webinars. Despite running a business full-time, Laura’s volunteer advocacy is life-changing. Her work empowers families, builds awareness, and ensures every child has the right to a voice.”
The Contact Awards, organised by the national charity Contact, celebrate the love, resilience, and often unseen contributions of families caring for disabled children across the UK. The Parent Changemaker Award honours parents who go beyond their own families to campaign for better understanding, inclusion, and equality.
Anna Bird, CEO of Contact, said:
“At Contact, we often hear from families when they’re struggling to get support for their child – and that’s what we’re here for. But it’s equally important to celebrate the positive changes being led by families themselves.
“I was so inspired to learn about Laura and her work through The Spinning World of Autism, which empowers and connects families of non-speaking autistic children. Behind every nomination is a story of quiet strength and everyday heroism – and we’re proud to shine a spotlight on that. With so many powerful nominations this year, our judges have an incredibly difficult task ahead.”
Contact’s Awards ceremony on Monday, 24 November will take place at the House of Lords in London. And to make the night extra special, the event will be hosted by broadcaster and national treasure Jane Garvey, whose warmth and wit promise an unforgettable evening.
