📣 We must stand together to challenge ableism whenever, however & whichever way we see, hear & discover it. ⭐

Ableism [noun]: discrimination in favour of non-disabled people.

How this may look when supporting the autistic individuals in your family, friendship circle, workspace or community:

⭐ Considering the language you use to describe autism & whether you’re unintentionally being derogatory, shameful or unkind.
⭐ Asking venues, restaurants & community places whether they have a sensory room, sensory packs or visual timetables to support autistic individuals.
⭐ Calling out or correcting ableist language whenever you see or hear it being used.
⭐ Listening, following the lead & truly caring about the views & needs of autistic individuals.
⭐ Forgetting all the myths & stereotypes you think you know about being autistic & learn directly from autistic individuals.
⭐ Making your voice heard if you witness discrimination against autistic individuals in action - whether this is face-face, via email or via social media - it all counts.
⭐ Always presume competence & never underestimate.

We ordered our wedding rings yesterday, so it felt like the perfect time to share another little update about how we’re planning our autism-friendly wedding for April next year. Ethan, our son, is autistic & non-speaking & I am also autistic - so planning a day that works for us all - not so we can “manage” but so we can relax, truly enjoy & fully celebrate - is the most important thing to all of us.

This is a snippet from the form we’ve had to complete for our registry office ceremony. We’ve chosen a small room, in a place Ethan loves with only very close family in attendance - so we’re hoping Ethan will be able to stay for the short ceremony - but we wanted to share all our plans with the Registrar in advance. We may hear Ethan speak via his AAC device during the ceremony & of course don’t mind at all [how fab would this be if he said something wedding related or even “I want to go to the car”!] & we may hear the low hum of him watching YouTube.

Truly, as long as he’s happy we’re happy. Our big dream would be for him to be regulated & happy enough to stay for the entirety of the ceremony - which we’ve kept short with no readings etc - but if he has to leave with a trusted adult that’s absolutely fine.

Inclusion looks like not forcing expectations, it looks like a low-demand, low-pressure environment, it looks like going with the flow, it looks like providing regulation tools, it looks like embracing all communication.

What will be, will be. 💜

We had a magical (Christmas) AAC moment this morni

We had a magical (Christmas) AAC moment this morning, one that’s only possible because of Ethan’s AAC device. 🎄⭐️

It’s 1st December so, of course, we had our Advent Calendars ready to go. We had kept this hidden but this morning when I walked in with them Ethan’s eyes lit up & he seemed to recognise it straight away. We didn’t say anything specific & waited to see if Ethan would remember what was happening & if he remembered what it was called. We navigated to the “Time” folder & Ethan was able to navigate “Special Days” - “Christmas” & without hesitation press “Advent Calendar”. He remembers. And, can tell us. 😭🎄✨

This is what Christmas magic looks, sounds & feels like to us. 💜

His little face when he first communicates “It’s time for dinner” will stay with me forever. 💜 And, his little smile at the end when he realises he has requested exactly what he wants for the first time ever. 😭🥰

We now truly couldn’t imagine any part of our lives without his AAC device - life-changing almost doesn’t sound impact enough. 💜💜💜
