A friendship story.
Today when picking Ethan up from School his teacher shared with me that Ethan had shared “I like Casper” on his AAC device. This is a little boy in his class, who was also with Ethan in reception, & it’s super cute to hear directly from Ethan that they have a budding friendship forming.
I distinctly remember a few years ago, in the early days of realising Ethan was autistic & hugely worrying about what the future would look like, being so upset on the phone to my sisters worrying that Ethan would never be accepted & never have any friends. Now, thanks to the power of being in the right educational setting & thanks to the power of Ethan’s AAC device & the wonderful way he uses it – he can share with us that friendships like this are forming.
Without his AAC device we just would never have known this. Ethan can’t come home from School & verbally tell us what he did that day, what he loved & didn’t like & about the children in his class – but slowly but surely, thanks to his AAC we’re making such wonderful strides towards this.
“I like Casper” – 3 simple words that just mean so much to us, they’ve made our day.
p.s I also shared this AAC communication with Casper’s Mum, who gave me permission to share this, & an after-school play date is pending. Apparently Ethan is talked about a lot at home with them too. How wonderful!
