I had the honour today of presenting at the 2026 Bett show, the world’s biggest EdTech event, & I loved every moment of doing so.
During my talk “AAC in Specialist Education: A parent’s perspective” – I had standing room only, an audience full of people nodding in agreement & it felt as if everyone was listening intently throughout. The videos of Ethan using his AAC device were a huge hit & they positively set the scene for my talk. 💜
I was able to share the importance of “always presuming competence” & link this with AAC use within education. I spoke about “all behaviour is communication” & how non-speaking autistic children are often marked as violent or naughty when they could just be crying out to be seen, heard & not underestimated. In summary I discussed how an AAC device has empowered all aspects of Ethan’s learning – whether that’s learning itself, self advocacy, regualation or building relationships. It all counts & matters to support an AAC users education journey.
I received such wonderful feedback following my talk sharing that it had really opened their eyes to the potential of AAC devices & one particularly wonderful listener – who shared that she couldn’t stop watching & that it was beautiful how I talked about Ethan. ✨
I also had the chance to see Bridget Philipson speaking – thoughts coming soon – & during the official opening of the show during a TaskMaster session I stood up & was able to declare a non-speaking individual & their AAC device as the perfect pair. More AAC awareness, tick! 🎤
I loved the opportunity to change minds, empower others & to show how AAC truly supports everything in Ethan’s life. It really is that important. 💜 #BettShow2026
p.s I also met the creators of the software, Acapela, that makes Ethan’s AAC voice (Alfie!) today. It was wonderful to hear some of their teenager voices & the amazing AI possibilities for AAC voices for the future. 👏✨
