On #NonSpeakingAwareness Day & always, please don’t hold non-speaking individuals back with stereotypes, pre-conceptions & outdated thinking. Always assume competence.
Non-speaking simply describes an individual who doesn’t use verbal words to communicate – they may instead use low or high-tech AAC to do so.
Non-speaking does not mean no desire to communicate.
Non-speaking does not mean non-thinking.
Non-speaking does not mean overly simple instructions are required.
Non-speaking does not mean they can’t hear you.
Non-speaking does not mean they can’t join in.
Non-speaking does not mean they are unable to communicate.
Non-speaking does not mean they have nothing to say.
Non-speaking does not mean they can’t be included.
Being non-speaking has no bearing on the individual’s intelligence levels.
Always assume competence, let them lead the way & just watch what happens.
